(Editor's Note: This essay was written in 2011 by then 7th grader, Emma Turner, and was the winning entry in a school-wide Veteran's Day essay contest.)
"Am I proud of my country? These words echo in my mind. Of course I'm proud of my country, the famous red, white and blue. America the free, American the brave, America the true. Why? Here comes the question that is not frequently thought of. Why am I proud of my country? After all, what have we done?
I'll tell you why I'm proud of my country. When Great Britain boasted of having the most powerful armada in the word, who defeated them? America. When the British invaders came they were well equipped. They wore find red coats, sturdy boots, and carried new firearms. Meanwhile, the American colonists died by the hundreds of disease, hunger and frostbite. With our farmers and young boys carrying pitchforks and old muskets, we drove them back again and again until they returned to their homeland defeated. With this terrible, bloody battle known as the American Revolution, we won our independence from Great Britain and are now known as the United States of America. In my opinion, this is indeed something to be proud of.
Since July 4, 1776, our country's birthday has been celebrated all over America. On that day I am reminded of how much I love my country and the freedom that we've earned. During the day people, vehicles and animals parade down the street, waving flags and rejoicing at the birth of our country. At night the glorious colors that represent our country are hurled into the moonlit sky. What joy fills my heart at the great bursts of red, white, and blue. The spectacular boom of sound that the small missiles leave behind as they streak into the sky, destined to shower the world with their light and spirit.
Although we sometimes take our freedom for granted, we must remember all the people who have served in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. Many have given their lives for our country. This is why we celebrate Veteran's Day. One day given to all the many souls who have devoted their lives to this great country. I respect and thank all these individuals who have served our country.
